My Favorite Food

In this lesson, you are going to learn about food. Common fast food are used as materials in developing the skills aimed in the lesson plan. First students will be familiarized on the names of these food then they will be asked to describe their favorite food. Lastly, students will be guided in developing a paragraph to describe their favorite food.  For teachers, check out the lesson plan provided below for you to learn how to use this lesson. Lesson Plan:  My Favorite Food

I. Objectives:  By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

  1. Tell what their favorite food is.
  2. Name some food like pizza, spaghetti, hamburger, fried chicken, French fries,  hotdogs, donuts and lasagna.
  3. Describe the taste and smell of food they like or don’t like.
  4. Use the following sentence structures: “I like _____. ”, “I don’t like _____.”,  “My favorite food is_______.”, and “I like _______ because _____.”

II. Subject Matter:  Naming and describing ones favorite food.

Materials:

Pictures of different food like  pizza, spaghetti, hamburger, fried chicken,  French fries,  hotdogs, donuts and lasagna (luh-ZAHN-yuh).

III.  Procedure

A. Warm Up Activity: Play the game  Food Race.

Procedure:

  1. Before the lesson, the teacher should prepare flashcards of pictures of different food like pizza, spaghetti, hamburger, fried chicken,  French fries,  hot dogs, donuts and lasagna.
  2. Divide the students into 2 teams or as appropriate. 3 or more competing teams are more exciting.
  3. Call for 1 player from each group.  Let them stand at the back of the class.
  4. Teacher shows a picture and the players name the food as fast as they can.
  5. The first student to name the food correctly steps one forward.
  6. The first student to reach the front earns a point for his/her group.
  7. Do this several rounds then declare the winning team.

B. Using “I like ____  .” and “I don’t like ____.”

Teacher calls for a student and shows a picture. Teacher asks the question “What food is this?” The student answers “It’s a ______.”  The student tells whether he likes or does not like the food shown.  This activity checks whether the students are already familiar with the name of the food.

C. Pair Activity. Asking questions about food. 

  1. Teacher calls for two students in front.  The first student picks a card and asks a question to his/her partner.
  2. Students use  “Do you like pizza ?”  and the other student answers “Yes, I do.” or “No, I don’t.” or “Yes I like pizza.” or “No, I don’t like pizza.”
  3. Ask the students why they like or do not like the food.  Elicit words about tastes (It tastes_____. )like sweet, sour, salty, spicy, cheesy and describing smell like “It smells good!”,  “It smells delicious!””It smells bad!” “It smells rotten!” “It smells awful!” “It smells smoky!

D.  Application – Telling ones favorite food.

Teacher guides students to tell their favorite food and give at least two reasons why.

Example:   My favorite food is pizza.  I like pizza because it tastes cheesy.  It smells good too. What about you? What’s your favorite food?

IV.  Evaluation. 

A. Speaking. Teacher calls for students randomly.  Teacher shows a picture and asks the following questions:

  1.  What food is this?      Answer:  It’s a pizza.
  2.  Do you like pizza?     Yes, I like pizza because it tastes cheesy and it smells good too.
  3. What is your favorite food? My favorite food is pizza.  I like pizza because it tastes cheesy and it smells good.

B. Writing. Complete the following sentences by writing the correct words on the gaps.

words:      sweet     strawberry  donuts    creamy chocolate  good

This is a _____ . It tastes ______ and ______. It smells _____too.  Some ______ taste like real __________ fruits.  There are _________flavors too. I like _________.

V.  Homework: Writing activity.

Write a short paragraph to answer the question “What is your favorite food and why?”

 

Now here is the activity sequence that you should remember when teaching this lesson.

  1. Play Food Race Game
  2. What  is this? It’s a pizza.
  3. Do you like pizza?  Yes, I do.  or Yes, I like pizza.   No, I don’t.  No, I don’t like pizza.
  4.   By Pair conversation.     Do you like pizza?   Yes, I like pizza.
  5. Why do you like pizza?    I like pizza because it’s delicious.  Its yummy.  It smells good.
  6. What is your favorite food?   My favorite food is pizza.  I Like pizza because it’s delicious and cheesy.  It smells good too.
  7. Complete the paragraph using the words:      sweet     strawberry  donuts    creamy chocolate  goodThis is a _____ . It tastes ______ and ______. It smells _____too.  Some ______ taste like real __________ fruits.  There are _________flavors too. I like _________.
  8. Homework:  What’s your favorite food?
