Talking About Daily Routine

Hello learners! Today’s conversation practice is about daily routine. In this speaking activity, you will learn how to speak naturally with your teacher about your daily routine. Read the conversation and feel free to change those that do not apply to you. The colored words or phrases can be changed with your own. This would help you speak naturally. Let’s get started!

PRACTICE CONVERSATION

Teacher: Good morning, (Student’s Name)! How are you today?

Student: Good morning, Teacher! I’m good, thank you.

Teacher: That’s great! Can you tell me about your morning routine before school?

Student: Sure, teacher.  In the morning, I eat breakfast with my family. We have cereal and fruit. Then, I take a shower and get ready for school.

Teacher: Wonderful! What do you do at school?

Student: At school, I learn different subjects like math, science, and English. During recess, I play with my friends.

Teacher: That sounds fun! What about after school? What do you do when you go back home?

Student: After school, I help my parents with chores like setting the table or cleaning up. Then, I do my homework.

Teacher: That’s responsible of you! Now, tell me about your evening routine. What do you do before bedtime?

Student: In the evening, I have dinner with my family. Then, I relax by watching TV or reading a book. Before going to bed, I make sure everything is ready for the next day. I go to bed at 9 o’clock.

Teacher: That’s great! Having a routine helps us stay organized. Keep up the good work, (Student’s Name)!

Student: Thank you, Teacher!

Teacher: You’re welcome! If you need any help or want to practice more, just let me know. Keep practicing your English, and I’ll see you next time!

Student: Okay, Teacher. See you next time! Goodbye!

Teacher: Goodbye! Have a wonderful day!

There you have a practice conversation that you can use in your ESL classes. For weaker students, you can divide the conversation into groups of 2 students to finish the practice faster.

Now let’s do a speaking test about daily routine. This time, the teacher would just ask one question, then the learner would relate his or her daily activities. Here is a sample answer:

SPEAKING TEST ABOUT DAILY ROUTINE

Teacher: Alright, (Student’s Name), it’s time for your speaking test. Please tell me about your daily routine.

Student: Sure! I usually wake up at 7:00 am. After getting up, I eat breakfast with my family, which is usually cereal and fruit. Then, I take a shower and get ready for school. I leave for school at around 8:30 am.

At school, I have different classes like math, science, and English. During recess, which is at 10:30 am, I play with my friends. After school, I get home around 3:30 pm. I help my parents with some chores like setting the table for dinner or taking out the trash. Then, I start doing my homework to finish all my school assignments.

In the evening, I have dinner with my family. We spend some time together, and sometimes we watch TV or read books. Before going to bed at 9:00 pm, I make sure everything is ready for the next day, like checking my backpack and preparing my school uniform.

Teacher: That was a great description of your daily routine, (Student’s Name)! You included the time you wake up, your activities in the morning, at school, after school, and your evening routine. Well done!

Student: Thank you, Teacher!

Teacher: You’re welcome! Keep practicing your English, and I’m sure you’ll improve even more. Great job on the speaking test!

Student: Thank you, Teacher. I’ll keep practicing!

Teacher: That’s the spirit! See you next time!

Student: Okay, Teacher. Goodbye!
