What kind of food do you like to eat?

Different ways to describe food.

1. tasty – delicious, so good to eat.

I really think that cooked vegetables are tasty.

I really like to eat roasted beef. It’s tasty.

2. tasteless/ bland – doesn’t have a lot a flavor

I ordered at this restaurant and the food were tasteless. They had no flavour at all. They were tasteless and that made me very sad.

I prefer eating meat than vegetables. I think vegetables are tasteless.

Steamed vegetables are tasteless unless you have a tasty dipping sauce.

3. flavourful – a lot of flavour

I like flavourful food. I like it to be spicy.

4. divine – (means like a god) it means so good.

I love to go home and eat my mom’s cooking because her cooking is divine, it is so good.

5. fit for a king – so good that a king would eat it.
– I really enjoy eating Indian cuisine because I think Indian cuisine are fit for a king.

6. rich in flavour – flavourful/ a lot a flavour.

I really like Thai food. It’s flavourful.

7. to my taste – the way you prefer your food.

I get my Indian cuisine to my taste, very very spicy.
I like my coffee with 1 sugar and two creams, perfectly to my taste.

Basic tastes

sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami (savory) are universally recognized, although some cultures also include pungency and oleogustus (“fattiness”).  pungent- smelling or tasting very strong and sharp – e.g. coffee

1. sweet – candy/ fruit/ – with sugar

2. salty – has salt – French fries, potato chips.

3. savory – flavourful – usually cooked food you feel full and satisfied.

Ex. hamburger, pizza

4. sour – lemon, vinegar, tamarind

I never like to eat sour food.
I really enjoy the sour taste so sometimes I add some lemon juice to my water.

5. spicy – hot – pepper, chili, ginger.

The flavor of fresh ginger is slightly peppery and sweet, with a pungent and spicy aroma.

I hate spicy food so I try to avoid cuisines that are known for being spicy.

I love spicy food so much that I like to cry when it is so spicy.

6. bitter – a sharp, pungent, or disagreeable flavor.

I love the bitterness of bitter melon.  It makes me drink more water.

7. umami – corresponding to the flavor of glutamates, especially monosodium glutamate.

Some foods that are high in umami compounds are seafood, meats, aged cheeses, seaweeds, soy foods, mushrooms, tomatoes, kimchi, green tea, and many others.



1. creamy – thick and soft, smooth – you don’t have to chew it

ex. yogurt

2. crumbly food– falling apart – crackers , pie crust
I love to eat pie and I especially love the crumbly pie crust.

3. greasy – oily food – pizza
I try to eat too much greasy food because I know it’s not good for me even though I love it.

4. gooey – like creamy but a little more solid. also thick and soft. – cheese, mozzarella sticks

5. moist – a little wet – tofu

I really don’t like the moist texture in my food so I never liked to eat tofu.

6.  mushy – soft and pulpy/ able to be crushed – banana, mashed potatoes.

I love to eat mashed potatoes because I love the mushy soft texture of it.

Eating Habits

What are your eating habits like?
Do you have healthy eating habits?

1. grab a bite to eat/ have a quick snack- means you are eating very small in a very quick amount of time

Answer: I am a very busy person and eating isn’t very important to me so in the middle of my workday,I will grab a bite to eat before going back to work.

If I have a second, I will havbe a quick snack but then go right back to work.

2. eat like a horse. – to eat a lot

I love to eat like a horse.
I try to eat a little bit at time but sometimes I can’t help but to eat like a horse and then take a long nap.

3. work up an appetite – you work until you are very hungry

I work so hard and forget to eat and then at the end of the day I realized I really work up an appetite. I am very hungry.

I work up an appetite most of the time.

4. eat a balance diet – you eat healthy
I try not to eat too much junk food/ bad food/ fast food too frequently. I try to eat a balanced diet so I am healthy and strong.

5. wine and dine – you are goin on a date with someone.

Answer: I usually just grab a bite to eat during the week because I am busy but on Friday night I like to wine and dine with my boyfriend/ girlfriend because its nice to sit down and enjoy our time together.

6. scarf something down – american phrase which means eating quickly- small or big food that you eat so fast.

I was at work all day and I really work up an appetite, I came home, got a huge pizza and I scarf the pizza down.

I scarf the pizza down so quickly. It was done before I blinked.

7. tuck into a meal – British which means the same as scarf something down.

I tuck into a meal so quickly that I was done before a minute went by.

8. have a sweet tooth –
I really have a sweet tooth so I like to eat sweet food.

Well, I try to have a balanced diet but I really have a sweet tooth so I love to eat candy when I can.

9. fussy eater -someone who only likes certain food

I try not to be a fussy eater but that’s just who I am.
Children are fussy eater/

10 vegetarian – someone who prefer eating vegetables/ no meat

I am a vegetarian, so I like to look for vegetarian restaurants and I don’t like to be around people who eat meat.

11. gluten free- No gluten – gluten is a protien found in wheat and rye (cerial plant) and other grains.

I’ll eat anything but my girlfriend is gluten free so we try to look for gluten free restaurants so we could both enjoy the meal together.

Types of Meals

Meals are regular occasions in a day where we eat large amount of food to sustain us through the day. During these meals, different kinds of food are prepared for one to enjoy. Meals are usually classified according to the time of the day. The meal we eat in the morning is called breakfast, at noontime is lunch and in the evening is called dinner.

There are also different types of meals, depending on the habits of people. When someone ask you “What types of meals do you enjoy eating?” you can mention the following types of meals:

Types of Meals

1.  ready meals – fast and convenient food. anyone can make them. You can usually find them at 7/11 or any grocery store, convenient store or at places where you can buy the food, take it home and all you have to do is heat it up and then you’re done.

Answer:  I enjoy ready meals because I am very busy and I always can find a 7-eleven to heat up my dinner and that will be good for the night.

2.  slap-up meals – very big meals that make you feel happy and satisfied.

Question:  What do you like to eat after a long day?
Answer: I enjoy having a slap-up meal after a long stressful day because it makes me feel so happy and satisfied and forget about all the work that I had to do that day.

3. gourmet meals – fancy nice meals where you sit down and enjoy your time eating – expensive.

Question:  What do you like to eat after a long day?

Answer: When I work really hard I like to treat myself to a gourmet meal of my favorite food at an expensive restaurant because I deserve it.

4.  home-cooked meals – meals that are cooked at home. Usually people have home-cooked meals with their families. Home cooked meals are especially popular on holidays.

Question: How often do you eat home-cooked meals?

Answer: I try to have a home-cooked meal with my family at least once a week so it can take the time to talk to each other while we’re eating.

5.  (Italian/ Chinese/ Indian) Cuisine – food from a certain place.

Question:  What types of meals do you enjoy eating?

Answer: I really enjoy Chinese cuisine and try to get it as much as possible but sometimes all the restaurants are closed and all I can get is Thai cuisine which is fine too.

6.  poultry food – birds that we eat

Question:  What types of meals do you enjoy eating?

Answer: I really enjoy eating poultry. I like to eat chicken, turkey and duck.
